Banned Books Night!

Coming, Wednesday, October 1st at 6:00 P.M., a very special community event. We will be holding our first Banned Book Night Read-A-Thon. Come join us for an evening of readings from 15 Banned and Challenged Books read by 15 readers from the community. This is an important and thought-provoking program so come early as we expect a full house. There will be refreshments after the readings. Please be aware that this is an adult program.

For more information, please see our Special Events Page

Explore Classes

Sign ups have begun for the new Explore programs. The Goodwin Library is taking sign-ups for Farmington based programs, see page 12 inside the Farmington Rec/Explore brochure. Stop by and pick one up. Please note that classes must be paid for at the time of sign-up.

Turning the Page Gates Conference

Director Deborah Christie and two staff members had the pleasure of attending the Turning The Page conference in S. Portland, Maine on the 9th, 10th and 11th of September. This was funded by the Bill Gates Foundation to teach librarians, trustees and Friends of the Library to advocate as fundraisers on behalf of their libraries, raising matching funds for the Gates computer grants, and fundraising in general. Everyone who attended came back with ideas and inspiration and can’t wait to get started implementing them.

One idea, you’ll start noticing this newsletter around town as an outreach to the community. Not everyone in town uses the library, but we hope by reading the newsletter, a lot more people will stop by and check out our services.

Another sidebar to the conference were two wonderful speakers. Kevin Carroll, author of Rules of the Red Rubber Ball and Julia Spencer Fleming, mystery author. We ordered all their books so you can get a taste of their work.

Thanks to the Happy Hobby Doll Club from Alton for lending us the wonderful dolls and books you can see on display in our glass display case. Included in this display are a variety of character dolls from books such as Madeline, Harry Potter, Little Women and even a Nelson Mandela doll.

Parents of Bright and Gifted Children’s Workshop

The group met on Wednesday, September 17th. The guest was G & T specialist Sandy Bonin from N. Berwick, Maine. She was very inspiring and gave the group many great ideas. The group wishes to thank her for her time. The next meeting will be Wednesday, October 8th at 6:00 P.M. Please be aware that this is an adult program.

Colds and Flu

If you feel under the weather please be considerate and stay home. We try to keep our staff healthy so they are here to help our patrons with programs, services and book check-outs. Thank you!

Strafford County Prescription Cards

Need help with your prescriptions? We have the Strafford County prescription card. If you don’t have insurance or prescriptions are not covered, this card entitles you to an average of 20% off prescriptions at participating pharmacies. No restrictions and no limits. Ask at the Front Desk.

Food Donations

Even though it’s summer, high gas and food prices are continuing to strain local family budgets. Please help us help our community and bring canned goods and non-perishable food items to the library. These donations are sent directly over the Farmington Food Pantry. We also welcome donations of personal care items and supplies for pets!

Oops…time went too fast and you have late books? Here’s another reason to donate - Food for Fines! Pay off your fines with canned goods for fines up to $5.00. Two cans equal $1.00 off your fines.

Boxtops for Education

Want to help the Farmington Schools make a little extra money this year? Don’t know what to do with your leftover box-tops? Here’s an idea, pick up a copy of the Box Tops For Education list from us and then clip any tops from the list and bring them here. Each box top will be worth 10 cents to the schools. There will be a can set up to collect them all, which will then go to the schools.

Computer Use Forms

If you are under 18 of age, your current computer use permission slip may have expired on August 31, 2007. Please be sure to renew or your computer access at the library will be denied.
